Rapid Prototyping Meets Injection Molding

How Digital Manufacturing Is Speeding Up Product Validation

Getting a product from design to production often involves a number of test rounds. When changes are needed, traditional tooling can make the process both slow and costly.

One company addressing this challenge is J. Krebs & Co, a long-standing injection molding specialist and Addinor customer. By adding Formlabs 3D printing technology to their workflow, they can produce mold inserts in-house and evaluate design changes much earlier in the process.

A recent example involved connector components, where both material properties and internal design have a major impact on performance. Instead of waiting for new tooling to be manufactured, different insert designs could be printed and tested straight away. Several versions were evaluated side by side, making it easier to identify the best solution before committing to production tooling.

For this type of work, repeatability is important. The printed inserts need to perform consistently so that test results can be trusted and transferred into the final manufacturing process. Being able to produce the same result time after time gives engineers a solid foundation when evaluating dimensions, tolerances and material behaviour.

By combining injection molding with additive manufacturing, J. Krebs & Co can shorten development cycles and reduce the number of tooling revisions needed along the way. It is a practical example of how digital manufacturing can help bring products to market faster.
